On November 11, 2022, The Crossing Lab announced the metaverse exhibition "Hybrid Nature," created with media artist Kim Bo-seul. The show came about after Kim was selected for an online media arts support program run by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Arts Council Korea. It opened with an artist talk at 8:30 p.m. on November 11, and visitors could take part until November 26 by downloading the metaverse program from the project site.
The exhibition reads the climate crisis and environmental concerns alongside an East Asian worldview of nature and the connectedness of living things. Visitors take on avatars, move through five spaces that make up the natural world, view NFT art, and experience a virtual utopia of the future. The company said its metaverse technology is what makes the avatar-based immersion possible. The opening-night artist talk was hosted by the NFT art lab LoNA (Kim Min-ji, Kim Jin-a, Grida).
Kim Bo-seul is a media artist who builds immersive experiences where art meets technology. She teaches digital art at Seoul Institute of the Arts and serves as Korea director of the global network CultureHub. For The Crossing Lab, creative director Shin Ji-ho spoke about what the collaboration meant.
The Crossing Lab, founded in 2021, is an Unreal Engine-based metaverse company. That same year it was named a promising early-stage venture by the Korea Tourism Organization and built "Fantastic Island," which recreated Jeju Island in the metaverse. In 2022 it was selected for NIPA's specialized metaverse company program and is preparing the metaverse art platform "One of Us." The company said it plans to continue working with Kim on that platform as well.
